What Listening Changes

Someone comes to us with a financial question. What is my business worth? How should I think about an inheritance? Does my portfolio still make sense?

We start there. Then the conversation usually moves.

The business owner starts talking about the employees who helped build the company. The inheritance conversation turns toward trust between generations. The portfolio review becomes a discussion about whether the money still supports the life someone wants.

The financial question still matters. We’ve simply learned to pay attention to what comes with it.

Where the conversation goes

Money gives us something concrete to work with. There is a number to calculate, an account to review, a structure to evaluate, or a decision waiting to be made.

Our job is to understand the numbers. It is also to understand why the decision matters to the person making it.

An owner considering a sale might be thinking about the people who spent twenty years beside them. A parent planning an inheritance might be wondering how the money will affect a child. Someone reviewing a portfolio might have reached a point where the goals behind the investments have changed.

Those concerns belong in the financial work because they affect the choices in front of us.

Staying curious a little longer

There is a temptation in our business to move quickly toward an answer. We have models, strategies, structures, and plenty of information to work with.

Sometimes the better move is another question.
